xBML™ Approach

View Corporate Overview Brochure
The xBML approach is comprised of a language for describing business and a set of knowledge harvesting and business solution methods, supported by a suite of software solutions. By encapsulating the entire operations of a business in a single, consistent, comprehensive model, including all the pertinent business facts and relationships, xBML provides everything you need to understand, manage, and improve your business.
xBML - the DNA of Business xBML is used to describe the DNA of business. xBML is simple and intuitive, and is easily understood by all levels of an organization. It is formally and rigorously defined and xBML models are unambiguous and truly representative of the business operation. Further, xBML is multidimensional; no other modeling language captures all of the dimensions of a business operation. Some capture activities, some information requirements, and others organizational characteristics, but none captures all of the facts pertinent to the business operation within a single model. xBML genes, the building blocks of an organization, are based on a familiar (business-facing), yet powerful set of questions:What activities must the business perform to achieve its purpose?Which information is used to perform each activity?Who performs each activity? When are they performed?Where are the activities performed?
In order to explicitly understand a business, you must know these five dimensions. Once captured within xBML models, the information can be integrated into a single comprehensive How model that captures the sequence of the activities, the dependencies between them, and the flow of information from one to another.
Simply describing the business using the xBML language provides unparalleled insight into the operations of a business. |

Knowledge Harvesting Methods
|
 |
The capture of information and knowledge has in the past been, and continues to be, a significant barrier to the success of business modeling efforts, requiring significant time and resources. Further, the use of traditional process modeling tools and techniques is cumbersome and ineffi cient, and in the end, does not provide a consistent, objective way of depicting the business. At best, the resulting models are incomplete, single use, artistic representations and thus cannot be reused to support other initiatives.
In response to such issues, BusinessGenetics invented Business Co-Formulation™ (BCF), a set of methods for rapidly capturing existing information and knowledge with minimal involvement from the business. Equally important, using BCF, information is captured one time and can be re-used to support all subsequent business modeling initiatives.
The initial phase of all business modeling efforts entails Document Co-Formulation™ (DCF), a systematic approach for reusing existing corporate documentation to produce initial business models. DCF requires no disruption to the business. Initial models produced using DCF are then reviewed, modified and analyzed with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from the business during facilitated work sessions. Structured using the xBML language, Facilitated Co-Formulation™ (FCF) sessions are highly efficient and effective, and as such, have proven to increase the eagerness of SMEs to participate in the process. Further, participants in FCF sessions become valuable resources within an organization and are often leveraged to support subsequent modeling initiatives

Business Solution Methods
|
 |
The ability to identify and solve specific business problems is the real value of business models created using xBML. In fact, the tenet of the xBML approach is that all corporate initiatives must operate from the same elemental understanding of the business – i.e., what, which, who, when, where, and how. Accordingly, BusinessGenetics has developed an extensive suite of formal, rigorous Business Solution Methods, which enable xBML to be relentlessly re-used – “model once, re-use many” – to drive a multitude of corporate initiatives. Business Solution Methods have been developed for Strategy and Management, Business Improvement, Technology Enablement, and Regulatory Compliance.
By example, a $20 billion corporation used the same xBML model to develop new products, generate business requirements, reduce cycle time, improve customer satisfaction, and ensure legislative compliane with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, among many other initiatives.
